Japanese Landscaping as a Serene Retreat

Every garden needs a theme, and a Japanese landscaping design will provide a calming retreat from the hectic world. A nicely done Japanese landscape will create harmony with the vegetation and the structures. It will recreate a flavor of Japan in your own yard.

Japanese landscaping should be filled with lush plants and flowers with distinct structures and soothing water features. The abundance and beauty of nature is the core of Japanese landscaping with stepping stones and other inorganic features to provide borders and focus.

Balance Not Symmetry

Japanese landscaping is usually designed in an asymmetrical style imitating nature.  A professional Japanese landscaper will seldom place elements in rows. The landscaper working toward a perfect effect will try to emulate nature as much as possible.  An expert in Japanese landscaping will want to have space for the creation; and avoid any look that is unnaturally crowded. This means that the plants and fixtures included must be carefully chosen for a beautiful look with a limited number of plants.

Symbolic Plants

The plants used in Japanese landscaping will bring visions of the country.  There are plants such as the Japanese maple that create the classic look of serenity and unity required.  The traditional bonsai trees are beautiful additions to any Japanese garden.  Most Japanese gardens do not have many flowers, but some flowers including azaleas are wonderful additions to a Japanese garden.  Some designers would argue that a Japanese garden must have azaleas.  Bamboo and moss plants will enhance the look of a typical Japanese garden.

Consider a Koi Pond

Japanese Koi Pond and Bridge
A fish pond with a colorful selection of entertaining Koi is a traditional touch that will add great charm and enjoyment to your garden. There are pond kits available at home improvement stores to help the gardener with design and installation.

These kits are available in small and simple to very large and elaborate depending on your available space, budget and overall plan. A stream or waterfall would make a wonderful addition to provide a lovely visual effect and soothing sounds of flowing water. Stones and rocks are frequently used elements in Japanese gardens and can be utilized in and around the water features as well as on their own or with plantings
